Manchester's first edition of the StartupDigest hits the streets tomorrow: Local events curated by Coral and Ian in Manchester, published in Silicon Valley, and connecting Manchester with a global network of ideas, activity and resources. Subscribe now for free to see what's going on.

How exciting! Manchester’s first issue of Startup Digest will be published from Silicon Valley tomorrow morning, prepared by myself and fellow curator Ian Moss.

The Mission of Startup Digest is to help you join or build the best startup companies, by publishing newsletters and organizing resources of the best tech startup events, a reading list of the best articles, and videos from around the world. Everything we feature is chosen by curators who are active founders, hackers, designers or investors just like you.

Founded by Chris McCann in Palo Alto, Silicon Valley 2009, Startup Digest is now a Global network which shares details of events, news and resources relating to the digital, tech and startup scene. Whilst news and resources are curated in California, upcoming events are picked out locally, and that’s where me and Ian come in, as the first UK curators outside London.

Here are the principles that guide how StartupDigest works.

Curated – We believe in hand picking the best information for our members (we’ll have a shortlist of highlights, rather than an exhaustive listings page. CG)

Personal – We believe that the best information comes from the people who are actively building meaningful things in the tech community (you guys! CG)

Action – We believe that you have to take action to get what you want in life. (Ain’t that the truth! CG)

We hope that Manchester StartupDigest will help you to plan your week, learn cool new stuff, and meet new interesting people. Also we hope our represent city will present as a an exciting hot-bed of creativity, innovation and ambition – but of course the update can only be as good as the events our City is hosting. So PLEASE, get in touch to let me know what you’re organising, attending or just think I should know about.

I really hope that you’ll SUBSCRIBE HERE, and soon become a part of it.

Let me know what you’ve got going on by emailing coral@capitalrelations.co.uk with Digest in the title. Thanks :)

Art has long been used to communicate scientific discovery. In 'The Life Scientific' Prof. Tony Ryan talks about cultural collaborations that aim to solve problems through science. He explains how combining catalysts with fashion can both clean the air and communicate an important message.

This morning’s ‘Life Scientific’ on Radio 4 has been my favourite so far. In it, Professor Tony Ryan, Dean of Science at Sheffield University describes how he brings his knowledge of Polymer Science to collaborative teams to tackle the big challenges and opportunities of our time.

Ryan explains why scientists must improve their communication skills, and expresses concern that ‘nano’ might become the new ‘nuclear’. It’s essential that the nano-technology message is improved if we’re to limit misconceptions of danger and embrace the life, and planet, saving potential. I’m impressed by Ryan’s ‘down to earth’ manner and appetite for interesting and innovative means of communication.

Click on the image to Listen Again.

The programme inspired me to learn more about Ryan’s ‘Catalytic Clothing’ project: a collaboration with Professor Helen Storey of the London College of Fashion. Working with the Helen Storey Foundation Tony has created a means to produce clothing which can purify air as we move.

Not only is Ryan enthusiastic about the direct environmental benefit of their creation, but also asserts that by combining science with art, he can better communicate both the scientific detail, and ‘bigger messages’ such as the degradation of natural resources.

This ‘Living Map’ visualisation from DED associates illustrates international online engagement with the project in the 3 months following the launch of the Cat-Clo film in 2011.

"What we need is an online space that has all the digital, tech, start-up, innovation events in one place." Ever heard that before? Well, here are the beginnings of my attempt to pull something together...

Ever been chatting away, and someone’s said “There’s lots going on in Manchester, but there’s no central place to find out what, when, where”?

Yep, me too. And I’ve had many conversations with great guys over the past 3 years about pulling something together, but great guys are generally:

a) perfectionists, and

b) busy.

As a result, it never actually happens. So after another conversation along those lines last night at Techcelerate, instigated by Martin Bryant, I figure I need to ‘JDI’ or ‘Just Do It’. A meme that also echoes the start-up sentiment on Martin’s Manchester Start-up Facebook Group.

So this is a test space, to see if it works. Nothing fancy pants, but it’s a start and I’m putting it out there. I’m currently trying to iron out glitches with the time zone – I’m sure @stevieflow’s ‘meet the Nominet Trust’ event doesn’t really kick off at 4am! Also, it wants to use a calendar view, rather than agenda, so you can’t read full listings, but I’m sure we can iron all this out.

I’ve hosted it on my @CapRels own blog for a quick start today, but plan is to put it on it’s own #JDIMCR wordpress site soon. So I anticipate a weekend of theme trials, but any tips or help in improving experience & making it look pretty, sexy, interesting, exciting, will be greatly appreciated!

In order to be sustainable, all you guys can keep this updated yourself, and I’ll be contacting organisers to canvass view and invite involvement over the next week, though I’ve put in a couple of events to test it.

I’ve started by including tech, digital, creative & cultural events but there was general agreement last night that we should start to think of Start-up in it’s broadest sense. Digital & tech skills pervade all new businesses now, so the segregation has become quite artificial. By bringing health, energy, sport start-ups together with digital & tech, we can encourage non-competitive sharing of ideas, and maybe some new business relationships.

So the process I’m trialing is:

organisers create their own events in a google calendar (remember URLs & any notes on cost etc)

send an invitation to jdimcr@gmail.com

an admin (presently me) accepts the invitation, and it magically appears!

We should get something that looks like this below, and we can iterate and improve over time.

When we give the calendar it’s own home, we can (I hope) also use that site to big-up the inspirational success stories as mentioned last light, and maybe have some discussion…!

I’ll hopefully share the address for the new site & update next week. (PLEASE SEE UPDATE BELOW, AND MY POST ON STARTUP DIGEST 11/03/11)

I’m aware there may be calls of ’our site already does this’ but if there is somewhere that captures all this, a big part of the audience is missing it somehow.

Comments, contributions, suggestions all welcome – thanks :)

The Technology Strategy Board has announced plans to establish a Catapult (TIC) centre for the connected digital economy. What will it do? Where will it be? Here's what we know so far...

Yesterday the Technology Strategy Board announced that it will establish a Catapult (TIC) centre for the connected digital economy.

The new Catapult will bring together technological expertise to help the UK’s world-leading digital businesses to develop, test and apply new technologies, reducing the risk associated with creating hugely profitable products and services in the future.

The centre may focus on areas such as:

·  How digital media and content are traded and used – in order to find sustainable ways to help businesses co-operate to create profitable services;

·   The pervasiveness of digital services – addressing the impact of new technologies and systems such as cloud computing and identity management, as businesses and industries become more digital;

· The blending of digital and physical worlds – looking at how our devices, clothes, cars and other consumer goods become better connected to enhance our physical lives.

The Connected Digital Economy Catapult will also help businesses that traditionally are less active in the digital market place, such as health, retail and education, by transferring knowledge and experience from industries which are leading, such as the media and creative sectors. This will help a broad spectrum of UK business take advantage of digital technology and quickly exploit profitable new business models.

The Catapult will also enable small and medium enterprises to collaborate with the wider digital value chain and showcase their products using state-of-the-art demonstrators that will be found at the Catapult.

via innovateuk.org

Next Steps… and where?

The location of the centre in not yet confirmed but over the next few months the Technology Strategy Board will be working with interested individuals, companies, research groups and key stakeholders to plan the establishment a Connected Digital Economy Catapult. TSB expect to publish a document in February detailing the vision, scope, ways to engage and the next steps for establishing the Catapult.

I will watch with interest whether this digital centre will be a means of supporting regional growth of the digital economy, linking with hubs like Manchester and Media City: UK , or possibly Bristol, or whether the government will continue to pool digital and tech investment around Tech City in Shoreditch. If we hope to grow the *national* digital economy, I believe it should be the former.

Keep in touch

It seems that the main forum for discussion on this Catapult is through the Digital Connected Economy _connect group.

A new public twitter list has also been created for the project, though at time of writing there are only 3 members and 6 subscribers. If you want to follow, go to https://twitter.com/#!/Catapult_TSB/connected-digital-economy and a #Hashtag of #CDEC appears to be in use!

“Details about incentives to spur companies to innovate and grow, including £75 million of additional funding targeted at small and medium-sized businesses, have been published by the government.

The Innovation and Research Strategy follows the inclusion in the Autumn Statement of additional finance for technology innovation, and outlines the new and expanded programmes to be delivered by the Technology Strategy Board.” via innovate.uk

In summary:

Additional funding will be made available for the Smart scheme – previously Grant for Research and Development.

The SBRI programme, which uses the power of government procurement to drive innovation by providing opportunities for innovative companies to engage with the public sector to solve specific problems, will receive additional funding. SBRI enables the public sector to engage with industry during the early stages of development, supporting projects through the stages of feasibility and prototyping.

The TSB will extend the Tech City Launchpad initiative to support new and emerging clusters in other parts of the UK.

The Technology Strategy Board will plan a new innovation voucher programme to support collaboration between SMEs and external knowledge providers, such as universities and the Catapult centres (the new technology and innovation centres).

In addition to the further support for SMEs, the Technology Strategy Board will work with a range of partners to implement:

£25 million investment to enable large-scale demonstrators in areas such as integrated systems for cities;

Investment in R&D in emerging technologies, with an initial focus on synthetic biology, energy efficient computing and energy harvesting;

Working with BIS and the Research Councils to establish a joint fund with the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology to pilot co-funded bilateral research;

Additional assistance to help UK businesses secure greater levels of EU finance for R&D. This will include a review of the support system for potential UK proposers to EU funding programmes.

Now this is a way to become a real Open Data city…

The first OpenData Hackathon for New York City kicked off today with 750 datasets and a prize of $2500 for the best hacks.

In 2009 I was involved in the early stages of Open Data Manchester, and helped the FutureEverything guys get a grant from the Manchester Innovation Investment Fund, but I’m not sure what happened after the initial support ended. Maybe their catalytic work was done …?

Open Data featured strongly at #Futr2010, and the initiative was successful in supporting Greater Manchester Local Authorities & the GM Public Transport Executive make their sets available. But austerity bit. The public purse paying to develop relationships between data owners and developers would seem frivolous these days. As a result opportunities for innovation, and social and economic development are being lost.

I hope that this activity and investment in NYC helps to move Open Data back up the UK agenda and we’ll see some cool new apps coming out of the sets released by Manchester and Trafford Councils.

It’s positive that the NY Times and VCs are involved in BigApps3.o. It might now be timely to warm up relationships between OpenData developers and GM investors and media. Similarly, it would be good to get some exciting brands (and private sponsors) involved in #OpenDataMcr to really pick up the spotlight again.

If you’re interested in reigniting the OpenData spark which was kindled by the FutureEverything team, I’d love to join you in that conversation – please get in touch @capitalrels or call +447540 373489.

Social Networks are drivers of collaboration, innovation and cultural and economic growth. But when so much influence is in the hands of the few, the risks must be understood and managed. For the first time, global corporates (pre crash) have been mapped - and look what's at the centre.

The importance of networks in the economy, society and indeed in the environment can not be understated. At Manchester: Knowledge Capital in the summer of 2010, I worked with Daniela D’Andreta on mapping the Innovation Manchester Linked-in Group, to understand the structure and connections within the network and more importantly the gaps and opportunities for development.

From working with Daniela, I know how complex and fascinating this increasingly relevant social science is, and so was interested to read this article picked up by Carlton Reeve on Twitter.

The PlanetSave article writes that for the first time the architecture of global ownership has been revealed. The availability of both international data sets, and methods to handle large networks, now permit the mapping of a network of 600,508 nodes and 1,006,987 ownership ties.

Strongly Connected Component (SCC); layout of the SCC (1318 nodes and 12,191 links). Source: Planetsave (http://s.tt/138oe)

Authors Vitali, Glattfelder, Battiston write:

“We present the first investigation of the architecture of the international ownership network, along with the computation of the control held by each global player. We find that transnational corporations form a giant bow-tie structure and that a large portion of control flows to a small tightly-knit core of financial institutions. This core can be seen as an economic “super-entity” that raises new important issues both for researchers and policy makers.”

The article points to studies by Stiglitz and Battiston on the increase of systemic risk arising from densely connected financial networks.

“Despite the fact that such networks may seem robust in good economic times, in times of crisis however, member firms tend to enter ‘distress mode’ simultaneously. This was seen recently in the 2008 (“near”) financial collapse (note: 3/4 of the network core in this analysis are financial intermediaries).”

Networks and relationships are promoted as the key to collaboration and innovation by a number of agencies including my own. This article highlights the importance of really understanding the key players and influencers – and the inherent risks as well as the benefits.

The paper, The network of global corporate control (Vitali, Glattfelder, Battiston) was published July 26, 2011, and is available from the Cornell University Library. The PlanetSave article includes a list of the top 50 global ‘control holders’, and there are many that you’ll recognise – including some surprises!

New analytics software from IBM Global Business Services allows leaders to observe how the core systems of a city — such as the economy, housing, education, public safety, transportation, health care, government services and utilities — work together and affect one another.

“Municipal government is still very much a world of silos,” said Michael Littlejohn, Vice President of Strategy for Smarter Cities at IBM, in a recent release. “The various departments — transportation, education, public works, and so forth — often have very little interaction with each other, dramatically increasing the possibility that an action in one area of government will have an unexpected affect on another area.”

…Would you expect transit fares to have any bearing on high school graduation rates? …

Smart planners realize they don’t know everything and can’t take every citizen’s opinion into account — unless they implement methods that allow for greater perspective. “Engaging planning,” then, is just the human side of thinking outside the silo. IBM’s service app provides algorithms to enhance the knowledge gained from public engagement, painting an even bigger picture about how systems and policies affect each other within cities.”
